CorrectPhoto or Photoshop Elements?
The Story of the Tall Ships
My wife and I went to Duluth, MN on Lake Superior to
see the tall ships during a maritime celebration.
Well, as we arrived we saw the line of people waiting to tour the ships
and decided not to do that. So, from across the bay I took a few
photos with my old Cannon G5. After looking at the photos I decided to
do an experiment to compare the basic editing process of
cropping and auto color correction between CorrectPhoto
and Photoshop Elements. Here is my "unbiased"
comparison.

First, the Conclusion
As you might expect (would I write this article if it
wasn't true?) CorrectPhoto gave a better
quality
photo
(both color and sharpness) and the editing was easier
and faster than Elements. And, if I had to
learn either program before I cropped and color corrected a
photo there is no comparison-CorrectPhoto wins by a
mile-maybe 10 miles. Now, let me justify my "unbiased"
conclusion.

professional photographer, I' looking forward to my new
Digital PhotoCamps. Your products will be of great help as I go
forward.....I find that the older photography enthusiast love
the simplicity of seeing photos come alive, the way they'd like
to see them, with just an easy click...It's Magic. I will now be
able to direct them to CorrectPhoto Digital Editor
knowing that they'll be able to spend more time taking
pictures than time in front of the computer editing."

Compare the Tool Sets
As you compare the tool sets of CorrectPhoto and Elements
remember that for most photos we amateurs take require two things:
crop and color correction. We don't need to clone,
airbrush, merge photos, etc. We just want a good looking
photo to print, most likely to a 4x6 print.

CorrectPhoto 3.1 Tool Set (Above)
CorrectPhoto functions are
available on the top menu bar for easy selection: rotate, crop,
scale, correct color, fix red eye, and sharpen. Most often the
only tools used are the crop to size (usually 4x6) and
correct color.
Photoshop Elements 6.0 Tool Set (Right)
You will find the cropping tool on the left menu bar,
the cropping formats at the top and the Auto Color Correction is
where??? (Hint: look under Enhance)

Bashing Photoshop Elements??
No, I am not condemning or bashing Elements. It is
a terrific photo editing program and I use it when I have to. For
example, to create the special effects of the red borders around the
tools in the above illustrations. However, when I edit my photos I
use CorrectPhoto because typically all I need to do is crop and color correct and
Elements is an overkill and too complicated and time consuming.
And, frankly I get better color with
OneClick Color Correction in CorrectPhoto and the
cropped photo is sharper.

The Results
1. Cropping the Photo
Locating the cropping tool and
the cropping format (i.e. 4x6 landscape) is faster and easier in
CorrectPhoto. (see above tool set images) While the cropping
window in the two programs operate differently both are easy to
understand and use.
2. Color Correction: CorrectPhoto's
OneClick
color correction technology is activated by clicking on
something neutral (gray, white, or black). In Elements the Auto
Correction is selected from Enhance on the menu bar and the auto
correction is applied. The colors in the CorrectPhoto Edit are
much more brilliant and alive. If you are an Elements expert you
can certainly use more tools to fix the color--if you want to
take the time. But, the color most likely will still not be as
good as OneClick.
3. Quality of Edited Photo: In addition to
better color the CorrectPhoto cropped image has the same high resolution as the original because of CorrectPhoto's proprietary
automatic resizing algorithm. The CorrectPhoto image has twice the
resolution of the Elements photo.
